Chris McKay's 2023 horror-comedy film Renfield, which stars Nicholas Hoult as the title character, is a contemporary retelling of the traditional Dracula tale. Renfield follows the exploits of the titular character. In contrast to earlier adaptations of the renowned book by Bram Stoker, this one delves into a character's psychological complexity.

Renfield suffers from a severe case of arachnophobia that has nearly driven him insane. He is detained in a mental facility where he receives various types of medical care and therapy, such as electroconvulsive therapy and group counseling sessions. A psychiatrist named Dr. John Seward (Willem Dafoe), who is intrigued by Renfield's condition, is the first person he meets in one of these sessions.

As the movie goes on, we find out that Renfield has been selected as Count Dracula's (Mark Strong) devoted servant by the vampire. The film is overshadowed by Dracula's presence, and Renfield can clearly feel his influence. Renfield's struggle to control his bloodlust while also trying to please his master is evident.

The film's deft use of humor is one of its many strengths. Although it is undoubtedly a horror movie at its core, there are many hilarious parts as well. This can be attributed in large part to Hoult's performance, which is both hilarious and unsettling. In a way that is both entertaining and unsettling, he is able to capture Renfield's internal turmoil.

The visuals of the movie are another noteworthy feature. The movie succeeds in establishing a genuinely eerie atmosphere thanks to its excellent set design and cinematography. There are numerous scenes in the movie that will have viewers on the edge of their seats, and the use of practical effects adds to the overall sense of realism.

Renfield can be criticized for being inconsistent at times, if there is one thing that can be said about it. The tone occasionally changes abruptly, which can be upsetting. Furthermore, some of the supporting characters could use more development, which can make it challenging to care about their outcomes.

Renfield, however, is a fantastic movie that will thrill horror fans in general. One of the most enjoyable horror movies in recent memory thanks to its deft use of humor and scares, strong acting, and stunning visuals.
